I'm happy enough to work with the old style TB2 and USB3/TypeA for now and keep using my 3+ magsafe2 power supplies. Plus the feedback from people I work with on how little the touch bar does for them and currently how annoying USB-C is.
If I had to pay full RRP ($1500-1800 depending on SSD size) then I may have held off a bit, but getting a discount on a brand new machine seems to tip the scales for me. It's worked pretty well (and I'm typing this post on it now. What would the announcement of new Apple equipment be without an iFixit teardown a few days later Dont even think about it, because it will never happen. I'll hang onto it in the current state to have as a spare/backup or test machine though. I really didn't want to deal with ordering another battery, plus a SSD on the MBP. and macfixit has a 480G SSD kit for another $600ish. The Air itself with deals on ebay came in under A$1000. I'm going to appreciate the Air being lighter and I'd be pretty happy with 6h battery life (compared to 3h and dropping). but I honestly can't tell the difference. I realise I miss out in going from Retina -> non Retina. I've looked at replacing the battery (I get 2.5-3 hours now) and instead bit the bullet and ordered a 2017 Macbook Air.
Although an official replacement from Apple is. This is typically not more than a few years, although it varies depending on how you use your laptop. I have a fully upgraded Macbook Pro Retina w/ 2.9Ghz i7 w/ 256G SSD. Laptop batteries have a limited lifespan. I'm going through exactly the same thought process.
